CBSE board reforms set to hone students’ skills
The grading system for the CBSE board is all set to be revamped in an attempt to hone the specific skills of individual students. In this direction, a new system of evaluation that supports Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) based on grades has been approved by the CBSE board. The new grading system comprises of formative and summative assessment of the student, to be done over two terms- during the yearlong academic calendar.
Here is a summary of the working of the new grading system:
- Each academic calendar of the school will be divided into two terms.
- The CCE would dedicate 40 marks for formative assessment and 60 marks for summative assessment
- The formative assessment
=>will evaluate and grade class work, homework, assignment and project work.
=>each term in the academic calendar will have two evaluations.
=>each evaluation will carry 10 marks.
Term 1=> 10 marks + 10 marks = 20 marks
Term 2=> 10marks + 10 marks = 20 marks
TOTAL= 40 marks
- Summative assessment
=>will evaluate based on term-end examination.
=> the academic calendar will be divided into two terms .
=>each term will have one tern-end exam.
=> the first term-end exam will carry 20 marks.
=> the second term-end will carry 40 marks.
=> the summative assessment marks totals up to 60 marks.
Henceforth, the students of class IX and X will be evaluated on a 9-point grading system. Each grade is given on the basis of both formative and summative assessments. The corresponding range of marks is indicated below:
A1 = 95 and above
A2 = 90 to 94
A3 = 85 to 89
B1 = 80 to 84
B2 = 70 to 79
C1 = 60 to 69
C2 = 50 to 59
C3 = 33 to 49
D = less than 33.
The option of giving grades instead of board exams will be available only for students who will continue in the same school in XI.
The new system of grading for class X examination is to be made effective from the current academic year and the class X board examination will be made optional from 2010-11 academic year.
According to the CBSE board, the motive behind this grading system is to de-stress the students with the pressure to score well and to encourage them to assess and develop their extra curricular skills better. On the other hand, the focus on CCE will not let the education standards fall.
Although the new CBSE reforms has not met with any strong opposition as yet, the change in the system beginning from the current academic year may spark some confusion and nervousness among students and parents of wards studying in CBSE schools.
If you want to give any feedback regarding the change in grading system or would like to make suggestions for further changes in the system, we encourage you to share your concerns and opinions with us through your comments.
