UID numbers to be implemented into Right To Education
With the proposed implementation of UID into the Right to Education policy, another purpose of the Unique Identity Number project was realized. The HRD ministry expects UID numbers to support the new legalization of free and compulsory education to the children in the age group of 6 to 14.
The Right to Education legislation provides for 25% reservation to poor children. The ministry is looking at identifying poor children through their Unique Identification Numbers and giving deserving children the opportunity to avail special education programs for the poor. The ministry also plans the UID number to be printed on academic performance record of such students, who can further use this to their advantage at some point in future. It also seeks to counter the problem of fake degree certificates which hamper the chances of deserving students in obtaining seats for professional courses or later in acquiring jobs.
The UID data can also be used for loan and scholarship programs in ensuring that no student misuses the facility in acquiring loans multiple number of times. With this proposal, the UID number scheme has found another reason to be implemented. Its utility in education sector seem to be robust, but how effectively it is going to be implemented is a question that only time can answer.
