Combating the problem of swine flu fear among schools
World Health Organization has said that in India the flu panic spreads faster than the virus. In case of Swine Flu panic button is pressed more often than it is necessary. Words like “epidemic”, “pandemic” and “H1N1” have become a part of everyday conversations and people are groping to get a piece of swine flu news, precaution and treatment tips whenever possible. Many schools and colleges were closed in several parts of the country following the panic over swine flu. While this is a precautionary measure to avoid spreading of H1N1 virus among school children, alternatives to protect children and letting them come to schools should be figured out.
Medical authorities have notified that children can easily fall prey to the H1N1 virus attack. But how long the problem is going to prevail is uncertain and schools cannot remain closed till the fear totally dies out. What is necessary instead is to educate the students and parents about swine flu facts and put the panic under a reality check. To begin with here are some facts about the swine flu and its danger level in comparison with other epidemics.
Out of the total number of swine flu cases diagnosed, less than 1% led to death. Swine Flu is not a killer virus like tuberculosis, nor do the symptoms of body ache and low energy levels last once it has been treated. It is a short illness, lasting for a week or so, and with proper care it can be combated quicker. Its prevention is also simple and requires a few lifestyle and hygiene changes.
Some steps for prevention remain the same as always. People should wash their hands, cough into their sleeves and stay home if they get sick. Proper food, proper sleep, supplements for immunity booster are being recommended. Moderate exercise three to four times a week will also help in increasing immunity levels. Surgical masks and respirators can be used while dealing with affected people or when you enter public spaces.
However, as an added means of precaution, sick children can be kept away from their classmates or advice them to stay back at home. Instead of panicking about swine flu, it is wise to be well informed and take precautionary measures to combat the problem.
